ALT TAGS & CAPTIONS for art pieces – A rough guide

Alt text for an art gallery should be a concise, 1–2 sentence description focusing on the visual elements of the artwork (medium, subject, style, colours) for accessibility, typically under 125 characters. Avoid starting with “image of,” and do not repeat information already present in the caption (like title or artist).

Guidelines for Writing Art Alt Text:

Include Key Details: If relevant, include the artistic style (e.g., “impressionistic landscape” or “geometric abstraction”).

Be Descriptive but Succinct: Describe the scene, medium (e.g., oil on canvas, bronze sculpture), and key colors, such as “A close-up oil painting of a stormy, blue sea with dramatic white-capped waves”.

Focus on Subject Matter: Describe the main subject without interpreting it, focusing on what is actually visible.
